Job Details:

  • Pay: £17.01 per hour (Overtime paid at x1.5 of basic Monday–Saturday, x2 of basic on Sundays)
  • Hours of Work: 38 hours per week – Monday to Thursday, 8am–4:30pm, Friday 8am–2pm
  • Duration: Permanent

Job Role: As a Fabricator Welder, you will be responsible for welding aluminium, copper, and steel using MIG and TIG processes. Duties include fabricating steel components and welding assemblies from technical drawings, and operating hand tools and workshop machinery. You will also maintain a safe and clean working environment with good housekeeping standards.

Essential Skills, Experience, or Qualifications:

  • MIG welding experience on aluminium or stainless steel
  • Ability to fabricate and assemble products working from technical engineering drawings

  • C&G/NVQ in Fabrication and Welding or equivalent

The Role – Test / Quality Engineer:

Our client is seeking a highly skilled and meticulous Test / Quality Engineer to join their dynamic team within the commercial vehicle industry. This critical role is responsible for the thorough quality inspection, functional testing, and load testing of various lifting equipment (such as cranes, hook lifts, skip loaders, and tail lifts) installed on commercial vehicles. The successful candidate will ensure that all installations meet stringent safety standards, quality specifications, and operational requirements, playing a vital part in guaranteeing customer satisfaction and product reliability.

For the successful Test / Quality Engineer, our client is offering:

  • Salary of up to £39,000 P/A depending on experience

Purpose of the role – Test / Quality Engineer

The primary purpose of this role is to act as the final quality gate for newly installed or refurbished lifting equipment on commercial vehicles, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards and internal specifications. Beyond certification, the Test Engineer will provide crucial feedback to internal departments (e.g., Installations, Engineering, Quality, Sales) to drive continuous improvement in installation processes, product design, and overall customer experience. This role is fundamental to upholding our commitment to safety, quality, and performance.

Main tasks and responsibilities – Test / Quality Engineer

Pre-Test Preparation:

  • Set up lifting equipment (e.g., cranes, hooklifts, skip loaders, tail lifts) for comprehensive testing.
  • Verify correct installation procedures have been followed against engineering drawings and work instructions.
  • Conduct pre-test visual inspections to identify any immediate discrepancies or potential issues.

Functional Testing:

  • Perform detailed functional tests of all lifting equipment systems, including hydraulics, electrics, controls, and safety interlocks.
  • Ensure all operational sequences and features function as designed.

Load Testing & Certification:

  • Execute precise static and dynamic load tests in accordance with relevant national (e.g., LOLER, PUWER) and international standards, as well as manufacturer specifications.
  • Accurately record all test data, readings, and observations.
  • Prepare and issue official test certificates and compliance documentation upon successful completion.

Quality & Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure all testing activities adhere strictly to company QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment) policies and industry regulations.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or non-conformances immediately.
  • Support the development and improvement of test protocols, checklists, and safety procedures.

Problem Identification & Feedback:

  • Methodically identify and diagnose quality issues, defects, or performance deviations found during testing.
  • Provide clear, detailed, and constructive feedback on installation issues to the installations team, workshop management, and relevant engineers.
  • Collaborate with engineering and factory teams to feedback learning points and contribute to product improvement and warranty reduction initiatives.

Process Improvement & Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and meticulous test records, reports, and documentation.
  • Support the continuous improvement of test processes, equipment, and systems (e.g., Benchmark systems).
  • Contribute to the maintenance and update of standardized test procedures.

Scheduling & Support:

  • Support and maintain the planned test schedule, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to customer completion deadlines.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other internal test personnel on safe practices and system usage.
  • Collaborate with the QHSE department on developing and reviewing lift plans and risk assessments and offer support to the installations team during periods of low testing activity or as required.

Future R&D

  • Identify future test and development needs and work with the design and R&D teams to develop new test capabilities as needed to support the project.
  • Continue to develop professional skills through the maintenance of a relevant training and development regime.

What our client is looking for in a Test / Quality Engineer:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (although alternative higher qualifications may be considered or long-term proven experience within Hydraulics, or the Automotive Engineering industry) – ESSENTIAL
  • Proven experience in testing, commissioning, or maintenance of hydraulic lifting equipment, particularly within the commercial vehicle or plant machinery sectors - ESSENTIAL
  • Strong practical experience with complex hydraulic and electrical systems relevant to lifting equipment – ESSENTIAL
  • Technical report writing to a high standard - ESSENTIAL
  • Project management skills – Ability to plan and deliver test programmes - ESSENTIAL
  • Relevant lifting equipment operator licenses (e.g., Abrasive Wheels, Forklift Truck, MEWP, Lorry Loader – DESIRABLE
